Description Small fretted travelling clavichord in oak case, with full width drawer below bottom-boards.
Inscription Johann Heinrich / Gräbner / Dresden 1761 Num 100 on underside of soundboard.
Specification Formerly strung as a quint instrument in bichord brass stringing with open wound strings in bass, recently restrung in iron and brass as an octave instrument; fretted from c, with d and a unfretted in each octave.

Description Free copy of a five octave unfretted north German clavichord based on an instrument by Christian Gotthelf Hoffmann, Ronneburg, 1784. In dark green case with vermilion interior and raised on a turned trestle stand.
Inscriptions CHICKERING -&- SONS - BOSTON - VSA - MCMIX No 51. on nameboard, Made-by-Chickering-&-Sons-under-the-direction-of-Arnold-Dolmetsch Boston MCMIX No51 on the hitchplank, and PLUS FAIT DOUCEUR QUE VIOLENCE (“Gentleness does more than violence”, La Fontaine, Fables, VI/3) on the inside of the lid.
Specification Two gilt metal roses in soundboard. Large cast hinges of English harpsichord type. Unfretted and brass strung with covered strings in the bass.

Specification Bichord iron and brass stringing; in the bass from C to c one string of each pair is at the octave and the other is an open wound unison string. Fretted in equal temperament from g, with notes a and d unfretted in each octave (e3 and f3 a fretted pair).
